Newcastle United Beats Sheffield United 1-0 Returns To Top
Newcastle United beat Sheffield United 1-0 at Bramall Lane last night and once again we returned to the top of the Coca Cola Championship. It was hardly a top performance from the players but as we have done since the start, they basically dug deep and had some luck with the goal. But I felt we fully deserved it for our desire alone. It was a tough tackle from Kevin Nolan that might have been whistled in most other situations but the ref decided to let it go and the ball went to Taylor. With space as he charged towards goal and from some distance, he launched a rocket which deflected off the Blades’ Chris Morgan and wrong footed keeper Benett. 1-0 to us and from then all it was backs to the wall stuff as we held on. Highlights of the goal as Newcastle United beat Sheffield United 1-0:
Tough luck on Kevin Blackwell and his boys but our lads could not have done more. Chris Hughton is pulling them together well and so far we haven’t had a dose of bad luck that might have befallen us with his appointment as permanent gaffer. Might not have been ideal for the club but Chris is as honest and down to earth as you can get for a boss and he should do well in the Championship with the Magpies. If we can steer clear of injuries which so far we still seem to be doing for now, promotion should *fingers crossed* be won in due time. We did throw away some opportunities to widen the lead at the top instead of playing yo yo with West Brom right now. It will probably come with experience later on.
Steve Harper had a blinder near the end and we haven’t really missed Given since he left for the money. Overall, it really looks like the players are finally getting used to the rough and tumble of the Championship – something that top players often find difficult to adjust to. Don’t forget we have Argentinian internationals like Gutierrez and they are doing rather well given the circumstances.
Next game against Peterborough United should be three points again. Our other rivals have difficult fixtures on the same day so maybe a good chance for a bigger lead at the top by the weekend.
